Lagu “The Pretender” muncul saat AS masih dipimpin George W. Bush, yang menjabat selama 2001-2009. Selama masa jabatannya, ia memimpin Perang di Afghanistan, diikuti oleh Perang di Irak. AS telah memasuki resesi terpanjang pasca-Perang Dunia II dan pada tahun 2007, tingkat dukungan terhadap Bush juga menurun.
