tirto.id - Peringatan Hari Buku Nasional atau Harbuknas dirayakan bersamaan dengan ulang tahun Perpustakaan Nasional Republik Indonesia yaitu setiap tanggal 17 Mei.
Sementara itu, berdirinya Perpustakaan Nasional Republik Indonesia sendiri adalah pada 17 Mei 1980.
Sejarah Harbuknas dicetuskan pertama kali oleh Menteri Pendidikan Abdul Malik Fadjar pada 2002.
Harbuknas ini diperingati untuk mendorong tumbuhnya budaya literasi, terutama minat baca dan menulis di kalangan masyarakat Indonesia. Perayaan Harbuknas memupuk harapan terhadap meningkatnya minat baca dan tulis masyarakat Indonesia. Bagaimanapun juga, minat baca rakyat Indonesia sangat rendah.
Kegiatan membaca buku sendiri mempunyai manfaat positif, mulai dari mampu memperkuat otak, memperbesar rasa empati, sampai dengan mengurangi depresi.
