Lagu Inggris abad ke-16 "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" lebih jauh menghipnotis ungkapan itu dan dengan diterbitkannya novel Charles Dickens 'A Christmas Carol' pada tahun 1843, sapaan "Merry Christmas" semakin populer.
Namun ucapan Happy Christmas masih ditemukan di Inggris. Dikutip dari Hindustan Times, ucapan Happy Christmas di Inggris masih banyak digunakan diperkirakan karena pengaruh Ratu Elizabeth yang kerap mengucapkan Happy Christmas kepada warga Inggris setiap tahun di perayaan tahunannya.
Beberapa orang meyakini bahwa kata "Merry" dikaitkan dengan kelas bawah sementara. Sementara "Happy" memiliki konotasi kelas yang lebih tinggi karena bahkan sapaan yang disukai keluarga kerajaan adalah "Happy Christmas."
Di sisi lain, para pemimpin gereja mula-mula di Inggris Raya diyakini telah mendorong pengikut Kristen untuk bahagia (Happy) dibandingkan tindakan "bergembira" atau merry-making yang berjiwa bebas, sebuah pelajaran tata bahasa yang bahkan cenderung diyakini oleh para sejarawan.
Namun, "Merry Christmas" adalah ucapan tradisional yang telah ada selama berabad-abad, sementara "Happy Christmas" bersifat konservatif dan tertutup menurut perbandingan linguistik.
