Pada mulanya, sejarah Hari Buruh Sedunia ini dirayakan untuk memperingati kemenangan kelas pekerja. Pasalnya, demonstrasi yang dilakukan oleh kelas pekerja disikapi brutal oleh aparat kepolisian.
Sehingga, aksi yang awalnya damai, kemudian menjadi aksi yang penuh dengan kekerasan. Protes tersebut mengusung aspirasi 8 jam kerja.
Dilansir dari laman Office Holiday, bahwasanya tuntutan delapan jam kerja tidak dikabulkan. Kemudian, pada tanggal 4 Mei 1890 salah satu massa aksi melempar bom ke arah polisi. Peristiwa ini membuat polisi dan warga sipil tewas.
Dari titik ini pula, beberapa kelas pekerja di dunia mulai terinspirasi dari gerakan tersebut. Akhirnya, 1 Mei ditetapkan sebagai Hari Buruh Sedunia. Hari Buruh Sedunia atau May Day, kini diperingati sebagai hari libur nasional di lebih dari 80 negara.
