tirto.id - Coolio merupakan artis asal Compton, California, AS yang menggeluti dunia permusikan, terutama genre hip hop, sejak tahun 90-an. Debut profesionalnya sebagai musikus dimulai dari tahun 1994, ketika album It Takes a Thief dirilis.

Jauh sebelum itu, Coolio yang pernah berkarier sebagai petugas pemadam kebakaran telah aktif di skena hip hop AS pada tahun 80-an. Album It Takes a Thief yang memuat lagu “Fantastic Voyage,” segera melambungkan nama Coolio sebagai musikus papan atas, terutama untuk subgenre hip hop yang dikenal dengan sebutan gangsta rap.

Selain It Takes a Thief, album Coolio berikutnya yang juga sukses besar dan dirilis pada 1990-an adalah Gangsta's Paradise, dan My Soul.

Musikus bernama asli Leon Ivey Jr. tersebut punya karier panjang di dunia hiburan hingga berhasil menjadi produser rekaman di AS. Coolio juga merambah dunia akting, dan bahkan koki. Dia telah memainkan peran dalam puluhan film dan acara televisi.

Namun, kabar mengejutkan datang pada 28 September 2022. Hari itu, Coolio mengembuskan napas terakhirnya di usia 59 tahun. Coolio meninggal dunia karena serangan jantung.
