tirto.id - Netflix punya kesempatan lagi untuk mendapatkan penghargaan tertinggi di industri film dari studio film tradisional Hollywood di Academy Awards atau Oscars 2020 yang akan diumumkan bulan depan.
Dua film Netflix, The Irishman dan Marriage Story masuk dalam nominasi untuk kategori film terbaik yang akan diberikan pada 9 Februari 2020. Dilansir Reuters yang diwartakan Antara, Netflix mendapatkan 24 nominasi, lebih banyak dari distributor film lainnya.
Perusahaan di Silicon Valley itu akan bersaing dengan studio-studio Hollywood seperti Universal Pictures, Warner Bros dan Columbia Pictures.
Joker dari Warner Bros memimpin dari semua nomine dengan total 11 kategori, sementara The Irishman, 1917 dan Once Upon a Time in Hollywood masing-masing dapat 10 nominasi.
Perusahaan di balik film-film itu diperkirakan akan menghabiskan jutaan dolar untuk memikat pemilih Oscar lewat iklan TV, digital dan acara istimewa dengan artis papan atas di New York dan Los Angeles.
Nominasi untuk film The Irishman meliputi kategori sutradara terbaik untuk Martin Scorsese dan aktor pendukung terbaik untuk Al Pacino dan Joe Pesci.
Marriage Story dibintangi Scarlett Johansson dan Adam Driver mendapat nominasi untuk kategori akting.
Di antara nominasi lain, Netflix juga masuk di kategori film animasi terbaik lewat Klaus dan I Lost My Body, sementara film biografi The Two Popes mendapat tiga nominasi.
Memenangi film terbaik akan memoles reputasi Netflix di industri film, dan membuatnya punya nilai tambah di tengah kompetisi ketat video streaming.
Netflix mulai mengeluarkan film orisinal pada 2015 dan berusaha membangun perpustakaan film-film bergengsi di tengah puluhan film komedi, thriller dan laga.
Namun pelopor video digital membuat kesal pemilik bioskop karena bersikeras menayangkan film itu lewat streaming pada saat bersamaan, atau beberapa pekan setelahnya debut di bioskop. Bioskop-bioskop besar keberatan dan menolak menampilkan film Netflix. Praktik ini juga memaksa anggota film academy untuk berdebat tentang cara mendefinisikan film.
Tahun lalu, film Roma yang tayang di Netflix juga masuk kategori nominasi film terbaik, namun tidak keluar jadi pemenang.
Owen Gleiberman, kepala kritikus film untuk Variety, memprediksi Netflix akan kalah dalam kategori film terbaik dari 1917 atau Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
"Ada banyak momentum untuk The Irishman," kata Gleiberman, "tapi perasaanku mengatakan film itu belum cukup untuk melewati garis akhir."
